Tora-no-o Cherry Blossom Tree

更新日:2017年02月27日

This historical cherry blossom tree is located on the grounds of Hoyo-ji temple. It is said to have been planted in 808 and that each Aizu domain lord would come to picnic under its blossoming flowers. It is a rare kind of cherry blossom tree in that petals come out of the center of its flowers, which are a light crimson. There are various theories regarding its name, which means “lion's tail.” One says that the name refers to the stamens of its flowers resembling a lion's tail, while another says that it refers to the tree's low-lying curved trunk resembling a lying lion. It is one of Aizu's five famous cherry blossom trees.
