Ukimi Kannon

更新日:2017年02月27日

Ukimi Kannon at Doju-san Ryuko-ji temple (Tendai sect) is a Kannon pilgrimage site associated with Aizu's thirty-three Kannon pilgrimage sites. This statue is found in the temple's octagonal Hachiyo-do Hall. In 1559, when Heitaro (who would later become Tenkai) was twelve years old, in a dream he discovered an earthen Kannon statue when digging in a rice field. The same year, he is said to have created a wooden Kannon statue modeled after the statue in his dream, and then placed an earthen buddha in its womb.
