Takakura Kannon

更新日:2017年02月27日

060-会津三十三観音第23番札所高倉観音-スポット-0

Takakura Kannon at Takakura-san Kannon-do temple (Tendai sect) is the twenty-third of Aizu's thirty-three Kannon pilgrimage sites. This Kannon statue was given by Takakura Prince Mochihito (the second son of Emperor Go-Shirakawa) in 1180 when he took up arms against the Taira clan to the accompanying chief retainer for protection. It is therefore referred to as the Takakura Kannon. When the temple was originally built it was located at the western base of Mt. Maruyama. However, in the mid-1640s it was moved to its southwestern base, and subsequently in 1739 partway up the mountain's south side, where it stands today. The Kannon statue is enshrined so that it overlooks the village below.
