Sakudari Kannon

更新日:2017年02月27日

058-会津三十三観音第21番札所左下り観音-スポット-0

This Sakudari Kannon at Sakudari-san Kannon-ji Temple (Rinzai sect) is the twenty-first of Aizu's thirty-three Kannon pilgrimage sites. This beautiful three-story temple was made by cutting rock located partway up a mountain. It is supported by five pillars lengthwise and four pillars widthwise, faces east, and has crown molding. The Kannon statue approximately 145.4 cm tall. From the garden side one can see Mt. Bandai as well as gaze down upon the clear Okawa River. It is thought that the temple was built as a place for shugendo (mountain asceticism) practitioners to seclude themselves before engaging in training. Legends are still told regarding its stone Buddhist statue that is not usually shown to the public.
