Munakata Gama Pottery Workshop

更新日:2017年02月27日

057-宗像窯-スポット-0

This pottery workshop was founded in 1719 and features the oldest ascending kiln in Japan's Tohoku region. At its shop one finds various items, from pottery for everyday use to art pieces. The “Nishin Bowl”—used for eating herring (nishin) pickled in Japanese pepper (one of the dishes in Aizu cuisine)—has been passed down through the generations at this workshop. This bowl won first prize at the Brussels World's Fair held in 1958. The workshop holds exhibits both inside and outside of Japan, and has left behind an impressive track record: in addition to winning various awards, it has presented a matcha tea bowl to the famous Todai-ji temple in Nara.
