Red Buckwheat Field

更新日:2017年02月27日

While generally the buckwheat plant has white flowers, the rare red buckwheat plant has flowers that are light pink and red. The red buckwheat grown in the Omata area is a cross between buckwheat from Nepal and Shinshu (Japan). It is normally raised in high altitude areas, and does not produce many seeds: only around one third of normal buckwheat plants.

When the weather is clear, you can see Mt. Bandai from the buckwheat fields, which are located on higher ground. In November a Red Buckwheat Festival is held, at which you can eat the chewy soba that's been hand-made from this plant.
