Yagisawa Canola Flower (Na-no-hana) Field

In early May a carpet of yellow canola flowers spreads out across the base of mountains on the western side of the Aizu Basin. There one finds the Yagisawa District (Takada Area).

Many people visit around this time every year. The field mazes are very popular with children.

Making use of unused farmland, people in the district began cultivating canola flowers here in 2007.

Previously in this district there was an elementary school and children's voices could always be heard. However, this was no longer the case after the school closed due to the decreasing population.

Wanting to do something about this situation, women in the district created the “Yagisawa Canola Flower Society” to revitalize the village.

As part of this project, they hold a Canola Flower Festival, and make and sell chiffon cake and cookies that use canola oil made from seeds they harvest.

These items are sold at the Canola Flower Festival held at the beginning of May, when the canola flower fields are filled with children's voices.
